Ingredients 

  • 1 1/2 c flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 c unsalted butter (1 stick), cold
  • 2 tbsp vegetable shortening, cold
  • ice water, as needed

In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar and salt.

Make sure the butter is as cold as possible, and using a cheese grater, grate the butter into the flour mixture and combine with your cold hands until its becomes crumbly.  Do the same thing with the shortening.

Add some of the ice water a spoonful at a time until a dough forms and comes together.  You can also do this in a food processor to save time, but I like to use my hands 🙂

Once a dough is formed, roll it into a ball and flatten it.  Wrap it in saran wrap and refrigerate for about an hour before using.  You can freeze it for up to 2 weeks.
