Praist the Lordt, niggas! Guess what time it is??? That’s right, it’s the most magnificent time of the year- Autumn aka Fall! It’s the time of year when Mother Nature likes to put it on chial! The reds, yellows, oranges, and browns are a reminder of just how beautiful it can be to let dead things leave. -See what I did there?? 😂 Fall is a time for harvest. It’s when nature hooks us up with loads of goodies. Think pumpkins 😏, apples, pears, and of course, sweet potatoes! Likewise, it’s the time of year when sweaters, jackets, boots and Uggs make enter into the chat. See, for those of us who like to put it on, I feel like this is our time to shine!
Not only is fall a time for baking delicious treats and indulging in comforting dishes, but it is also an opportunity to gather with family and friends to create memories and foster connection. There’s something special about gathering with friends with the smell of baked sweet potato cake wafting through the air, sharing stories, laughs, and making memories that will ultimately connect us in ways that are yet to be seen. The joys of togetherness and warmth infuse every gathering creating bonds with our loved ones that transcend space and time.
So in this season of my birth- ♎️ gang gang! I gotta say that I’m feeling very grateful- for many things. Family, friends, life itself! I’ve been writing and putting together the recipe book- coming soon! For me, this season is a welcomed reprieve and allows me to reflect, recharge and continue along on my self care journey. As the colorful leaves fall to the ground, I will continue to embrace the changes that life brings my way, and remember how beautiful these changes can be, if I only let go.
May this fall season bring you joy, peace, and the inspiration to embrace the beauty that is both within and that surrounds us.
Sweet Potato Biscuits
We here at Cookin’ n Heels are a sweet potato brand. No shade to pumpkin spice [shade], but sweet potatoes are just better. But anyway you’ve seen me make these on my socials, so here’s the recipe. Let me know if you try it out!
Ingredients
- 3/4 c mashed sweet potatoes, cooled
- 1/3 c buttermilk
- 1 1/2 c all purpose flour
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 6 tbsp cold butter, grated
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1/4 tsp ginger
Preheat your oven to 475ºF.
Mix together, your sweet potatoes, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger in a bowl. Add the buttermilk and mix- make sure this is thoroughly incorporated together. Set aside
In a large mixing bowl, add the flour and baking powder and whisk together. Grate the cold butter into the mixture and incorporate this with your hands.
Combine the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and fold together with a rubber spatula. Once incorporated, turn the dough out on to a floured surface, and use your hands to flatten the dough and a dough scraper to make folds in the dough.
*I personally don’t subscribe to using a rolling pen here- you don’t need it and it’ll make your biscuits tough but hey, go off…
Use a biscuit cutter to cut straight down so as to not seal the edges. repeat the process (working quickly to maintain the coldness of the butter) until all of the dough is cut out. Place the biscuits on a parchment lined baking pan. Bake for about 30 mins or until the biscuits are done.
